Zoroaster
Spitaman
Zoroastrians, like other
Persians, belong to the Aryan race, who nearly 5000 years ago emigrated
from the north of the Caspian Sea to the south including the Iranian
plateau, the Indian subcontinent and Europe. Indo-Iranians and
Indo-Europeans have beliefs, literature and social entities that have
common features with the Zoroastrian faith.

Zoroaster was born in 1768 B.
C. He is an ancient Prophet and a wise scholar, who founded the
Zoroastrians religion, which sprang from the East of Iran and spread
throughout the country. Followers of Zoroaster, the first Prophet to
preach the existence of one
Supreme God. Called Ahura Mazda, live in Iran and other parts of the
world. Zoroastrians initially lived in the prehistoric Kianian dynasty
and later during the period of the Medes. Achaemenians, Arscids and
Sassanians, they lived alongside the Buddhists and other ancient
Indo-Iranian cults like the Mithras, the Zurvans and the Anahitas.
Zoroastrianism flourished during the Sassanian dynasty and became the
official religion of the Iranian Empire.
After the invasion of Iran by
the Arabs, Zoroastrianism declined because of Arab thoughts and forced
conversion. However, the Zoroastrians were able to maintain their local
self-governance in many parts ofIran until the 14th Century A.D. Many
Zoroastrians were forced to flee to India and China. Resulting from this
continuing diaspora, adherants of Zoroaster in India are called Parsis.
About 100,000 Zoroastrians who have survived in Iran live in Yazd,
Kerman, Tehran, Shiraz, Isfahan, Zahedan and Ahwaz. A few are scattered
amongst other cities of Iran. The Zoroastrian populaiton throughout the
world is estimated to be about 300,000.
Avesta,
the sacred book
The sacred book of the
Zoroastrian faith is A vesta, written in a very ancient script, the
DinDabireh, which is the ancient language
of north-eastern Iran. It is written from right to left A vesta consists
of five parts which are: Yasna (blessings) Visperat (homage) Yasht
(worship) Vandidad (moral laws) Khordeh Avesta (customs and prayers) .
The oldest existing volumes of A vesta scriptures are 800 years old and
are kept in the Louvre museum,
Paris and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Few old handwritten
copies are olso preserved in various fire temples in Iran.
Gatha, which IS part of
Yasena, contain (plural of Gat meaning hymn) contain the philosophy and
teachings of Zoroaster regarding Godliness, freedom justice, purity,
righteousness, progress and prosperity, and happiness.
Zoroaster prophet of
Ancient Iran
The birth of Zoroaster has
been deduced according to the hymns of Gatha and other historical
findings and is known with reasonable certainty. Zoroaster was born
before Iron was discovered and according to historians, Zoroaster lived
in the period when the two languages of A vesta and Sanskrit separated
from each other. Thus Zoroaster was born in 1768 B. C. and attanied
prophethood in 1738 B.C. at the age ofthirty.
The Gatha and Ferdosi I
s famous Shahnameh reveal that
Zoroaster began preaching his religion in Bactria the capital of
Keyanian ruler King Vistap (Hyastasper of Goushtasp). He was born in
Azarbaijan, but for the propagation of his religion traveled to Marve (Khorasan)
and Bactria (Afghanistan). From and early age, he came up with new
ideology strongly opposing the prevalent worship of differents gods of
the elements of nature, and did away with practices like religeous
scrifices (including animals) by ancient Indo-Iranian cults. His wise
mother Dughdhova influenced this attitude. When he was 30 years old
revelation dawned on him through Vohuman (Good Thoughts) of Ahura Mazda,
the Wise Creator, the One God, who chose Zoroaster as his prophet.
Zoroaster I s
teachings are expressed in his Gatha hymns where the whole doctrine of
Zoroastrianism can be summarized in three principles: Good Thoughts,
Good Words and Good Deeds. They contain the religious teachings
regarding belief in Ahura Mazda, the One Supreme Wise Creator of the
universe. He advocates freedom ofthought and freedom to choose
one I s
path in life and propunds that those who choose the pious path will be
rewarded in the Land of Songs. Aquiring knowledge, fighting evil,
bringing progress, peace and prosperity to the world and working to
benefit all humanity are part of his message. Zoroaster is a Universal
Prophet whose teachings have attracted Iranian and foreign philosphers
and intellectuals, who commend his universally applicable views based on
moral character and quest for freedom.
It is believed that Zoroaster
was assasinated by a Turanian traitor in a Fire Temple in Bactria
(Afghanistan) on 5th Dey (26 Dec.) at the age of seventy seven. His
burial place has not been identified with certainty so far. Ceremonies
marking his death anniversary are held by Zoroastrians on this date.
Followers of Zoroaster
continue to live in peace with others. maintaining the principles of
truth, decency, freedom and friendship in keeping with the hymns of
Zoroaster's Gatha and his
cultural teachings in the Avesta. Some of the ancient pre-Zoroastrian
legends and customs have also been retained in the Avesta alongside the
teachings of the Prophet of ancient Iran.
AhuraMazda
Zoroastrianism is the oldest
monotheistic (one single God) religion of the world. Ahura Mazda, Lord
of Wisdom, Creator of all, is mighty, just, wise, compassionate and
immortal. He is total perfection and yet is perfectly humble, and is
looked upon by Zoroastrians as a friend. In
the Gatha and throughout A vesta, there is no doubt as to the
Unity of God (Ahura Mazda) and He alone is the Creator of the Universe,
mankind and all existence. No force opposes him and Ahriman or Satan is
not His rival. In
the hymns of Zoroaster, Ahura Mazda
is referred to as a friend. Holy Zarthosht is a freedom seeker, who
aspires to see Ahura Mazda, converse with Him and ultimately unite with
Him.
According to Indo-Iranian
mythology however, in certain other ancient religions such as Zurvanism,
Ahura Mazda (Hormuzd) and Ahriman are two mythological characters
fighting each other for supremacy. This misleading similarity of names
has been mistakenly construed as dual worship in Zoroastrianism.
In Zurvanism, Zurvan is an
Indo- Iranian mythological God, who as a result of one thousand years of
prayers and sacrificial rites, gives birth to Hormozd (Ahura Mazda) and
Ahriman (Satan). Later, these two are constantly fighting each other for
supremacy. This duality does not exist in Zoroastrianism. What
Zoroastrianism teaches is that Ahura Mazda is the sole Creator of the
Universe. However, on this earth, there are two simultaneous forces
which oppose each other: Goodness or light and evil or darkness. Neither
of them challenges the supremacy of Ahura Mazda.
Zoroaster extols his
followers to freely choose the path of goodness themselves, without any
compulsion, explaining that righteousness will be rewarded in this world
and the next. This freedom to choose one's path and religion is unique
to Zoroastrianism. Ahura Mazda, the Creator of existence has six divine
characteristics, namely: benevolent thinking; righteousness and
regularity; strength and authority; love and humility; perfection; and
lastly immortality.
